Hilary Newiss has practised as a solicitor specialising in intellectual property law for 25 years. Her experience spans the entire field of intellectual property, ranging from media-related matters to biotechnology. She was a partner in Denton Hall for ten years and head of the firm’s intellectual property department.

Hilary is now a consultant on intellectual property matters, and is involved in public policy issues. She served on the government’s Intellectual Property Advisory Committee and the Human Genetics Commission, where she chaired the Gene Patents Group. She is a co-author of the Royal Society’s report on Keeping science open: the effects of intellectual property policy on the conduct of science (April 2003). She is currently a non-executive director and trustee of Roslin Foundation, on the Advisory Panel for Public Sector Information, a member of The National Information Governance Board for Health and Social care and deputy Chair of the HFEA Appeals Committee.
